Overview
The recent introduction of a highly effective vaccine against
human papillomavirus (HPV) exposed the need for population-based
surveillance of HPV-related diseases.
In 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
funded a collaboration between the California Emerging Infections
Program (CEIP) and the California Department of Public Health
(CDPH) STD Control Branch to develop a comprehensive plan to
conduct surveillance of cervical cancer precursor lesions including
cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2/3 and adenocarcinoma
in situ (AIS).
The pilot phase of this project will be conducted in Alameda
County.
Purpose
• To determine the burden of CIN 2/3 and AIS in Alameda
County and monitor trends in incidence,
• Conduct enhanced surveillance and HPV testing for a
subset of cases, and
• Explore the development of infrastructure for statewide
surveillance to evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccine including
disease surveillance, immunization registry, and behavioral
surveillance.
Human
Subject Protection
To ensure compliance with standards for the protection of human
subjects, this project has received approvals from the Institutional
Review Boards (IRB) of the the California Health and Human Services
Agency and the University of California at Berkeley. The project
will be submitted to any other applicable institutions as necessary.
The California State Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects
approval
and HIPAA waiver for this project.
