California Emerging Infections Program*

Position Open Until Filled
Public Health Research Assistant
Oakland Office, Northern California
15 to 20 hours per week

The Public Health Research Assistant will assist with surveillance and related activities of the
California Emerging Infections Program (CEIP). The applicant should possess excellent
communication skills, both verbal and written. Work will be conducted at the main office in
Oakland. Occasional travel to hospitals and health departments in the San Francisco Bay Area
may also be required. Office duties will include, but are not limited to, data entry, interviewing
cases or controls for ongoing studies, contacting hospitals and laboratories for information
regarding cases, ordering medical records, and general organizational office tasks.

Requirements
.. Experience with Windows 2000 platforms, Office 2000, especially Excel and Access,
particularly with data entry
.. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly over the telephone.
.. Self-motivation to work independently.
.. Meticulous attention to detail

Desired Skills
.. Prior college-level coursework in Health Science, Biology, Public Health, and/or Microbiology
.. Concurrent enrollment in a Masters of Public Health program.
.. Previous experience with medical terminology and/or medical records abstraction.
.. Work or volunteer experience in a public health or medical research setting.
.. Ability to travel to local hospitals and health departments as needed
.. Fluency in English and Spanish (both written and spoken)
Salary: $17.11/hour
